Poor workmanship and equally poor testing. However, now the mics work as they are supposed to and I can Zoom and Skype to my hearts content. I removed those waterproof rubber shields as it was almost impossible to remove the tape from the area of the mic hole and then put them back in place. Unfortunately the holes are also covered with double sided tape thereby substantially muffling the sound pickup of the mics. The double sided tape should have holes at the place where the mic is located.

The microphones under the screen - there are two on either side of the camera - have two small rubber covers fixed with double sided tape to make them moisture proof. I think this is the most likely problem for most of the complaints.

For all those who are frustrated with finding a solution let me give you one of the possibilities. I looked up YouTube and found one video which describes a similar problem and it's solution. Actually it picks up very little sound so almost not working. The microphone hasn't been working since day one.
